The Startling Unknowable Chozair
Last update: 2005-08-28

When the towns around the Eastern European village of Breslav were attacked by the Fifth Column in 1947, after the fall of the Third Reich, the Rabbi of Breslav was in dire straits. The villagers had fled, and there was no one to protect the Torah. With little choice, the Rabbi created The Golem. He gave it one order, "Fight the attackers, my chozair, my revenant!"

The golem smashed the Fifth Column regiment, but as they fled, The golem turned to the Rabbi and said, "I will fight the attackers, wherever they go." And so, he has tirelessly followed them, and The Council...to Paragon City.

It is obvious with a past such as his, it is difficult if not impossible to get to know this golem. But in-depth research by noted Paragon Times journalist Marla Zachariah has, well, unearthed some rather surprising facts about everyone's favorite creation...

For months, we in Paragon City have known of him (if I can give a gender) as The Golem. But I had a chance to talk with him, and the first thing I found out is that he has a name for himself. "I do not know what a golem is, though everyone seems to refer to me that way. Father only ever called me one thing. He called me his chozair, and that is the only name that rings true for me."

The Startling Chozair is often seen waiting, high up on the rooftops of Paragon City. Often, he works alone, moving quietly, and striking fear into the minds of evil-doers, as friends simply vanish, one by one, the second they turn their backs on them...never to be seen again until they, too, feel the gentle tap of the golem's mallet and wake up in a jail cell.

But when the trail of The Council has gone cold, the golem takes time to contemplate his very existence. He knows that the only being he could call "Father" has been dead for many years, yet he goes on. In his creation, Father inscribed a simple 3-letter Hebrew word on his forehead (Em-ett; truth), barely discernible from farther than a foot away. A simple rub of the first letter on his forehead (aleph) would mean his own demise (Mett; death). "There must be more than simply fighting, as necessary as that is," he has been known to say.

In several disastrous attempts to "fit in" with the humans, such as they are, in Paragon City, the golem has sought out friends...
 ...on the streets...
 ...in the country...
 ...and in the darkest
corners of the City.

This has gone on for 30 years, off and on, with varying amounts of...damage. Some results have only added to the golem's resolve. Some have added to his shame, in that he knows how Father would be disappointed.

You might think such an endeavor would prove futile. And you would be right, but not through failure, but through the golem's own choice. For though he eventually learned the behaviors...

 ...some would prove too much.

The golem has moved on from such attempts, but it has taken a toll. It is rare to find the golem saying anything at all. But, if anything, his emotions may have actually increased. Indications are that Chozair's state of mind may be deteriorating while at the same time his effectiveness against Paragon City's villains has improved. Recently, the golem has been seen appearing as less of an earthy revenant, but as more of a violent stalker, his magic symbols blazing out of a dark visage that appears to show no mercy.

Yet, I believe there is hope. The advent of the many Heroes in Paragon City may have given Chozair others to relate to. As hard as it may be to believe, the "Followers of Coriolis" supergroup is said to have been founded by the golem. While the group's name seems to reflect its leader's inner storms, it is yet a good sign. Perhaps Chozair's future will soon contain something that could hardly be called happiness, but perhaps could be called contentment. I wish him well in what ever lies ahead.
